Spanner Christmas Challenge 2016 - Rules

Last updated: 22:35 GMT+1 on 21-10-2016

For several years the Spanner II Meccano mailing list has run a Christmas Challenge. This year is no different and here are the very simple rules. Information about joining the Spanner list can be found by clicking on the blue panel in the left-hand column of this page or by following THIS link.

Rules for the 2016 Christmas Challenge

The first rule is that this is a bit of fun - Be nice!

The challenge this year is to select a manual model from any manual found any No.4* set from the new renumbered sets of 1937 onwards (that includes the smaller set manuals as they were included in the bigger sets) and improve it by adding parts or swapping parts for more appropriate parts, that were not included in the set.

*The No4 set was renumbered in the early 1970s to No5. Subsequently, in the late 1980s when, Meccano was owned and sold from France, the progressive sets were relaunched by Meccano SA as 'Meccano Enthusiast'  sets. The No.5 set in this series also had similar contents to the 1970s set and featured the same manual models.  Manuals from either of these No.4-derived sets are both deemed admissible.

It is not a complete rebuild. I am not going to limit the parts that can be used or the number thereof. BUT the model must still have the simplicity of it's original design. Adding headlamps to a car, even giving it crude steering would be in the spirit of the challenge. A completely new six-speed gearbox and drive chain would not. I am sure you understand the sort of thing.

All parts used must be either Meccano or extended range parts that are available to buy by all. No modified parts (except for bending and folding) to be used. Motors can be of any type Meccano or not, so long as they are capable of being mounted without the need for modification. Motors supplied and sold with adaptor plates are acceptable.

Any colour of part can be used in whatever combination.

That is it, nothing complicated, I have tried to keep it as simple as possible.

You can make as many entries as you wish.

To enter just post a picture of your model (or parents and grandparents may post models for their kinsfolk) on the Spanner II list. Anyone having trouble doing this, because of the size limitations imposed by the list, can contact me and I should be able to help you.

CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES TO BE POSTED TO THE SPANNER LIST is 31st December 2016.

Entries will be displayed in the Christmas Challenge Gallery on the NZ Meccano website where voting can take place. The winner will be the person whose model has received the greatest number of votes.

PLEASE DO NOT POST ENTRIES DIRECTLY TO THE NZ MECCANO WEBSITE
(without posting them on Spanner first)

Ralph.
